"My momma always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'" - Forrest Gump It's a lot like that with
improvisation... it's just one surprise after another, once you "open
the box." Always curious about improvisation? Have you wanted to
improvise but felt that it was something "beyond you?" Well,
now, there MUST be a way for even the earliest beginner to get his or
her foot in the door with improvisation.
There is. Read on... Hi...
I'm Dave Longo.
For me, the requests have been
overwhelming... but I'm okay with that! I'll tell you why...I've received more requests for a simple program that makes learning to improvise attainable by even the earliest beginner than I can count. My reaction to this is nothing less than one of gratitude. I love this art... and I consider it a pleasure as well as a privilege if I can make a positive difference for even one person out there who even remotely believes that he or she doesn't have what it takes to get a handle on improvisation. What Is Improvisation Though a very simple way
of putting it, we're referring to "creating in
the moment"... more specifically, making those melodies sound more
interesting. This can simply mean embellishing or "decorating" the
melody of a favorite song as you already know how to play it or even
going further by creating your own musical lines that take the place of
the melody in certain places of a song. Either way,
it's creating... and you can do it.
It Doesn't Have To Be A Mystery For so many people, the idea of improvising music takes on an identity of some kind of magical ability enjoyed only by a select few individuals who have somehow been blessed with some kind of "special talent" that others can only appreciate from an observer's viewpoint. I'm here to tell you that it's simply not true. You don't have to be on the outside looking in. If you think of improvisation as something "beyond you," then today is a day for celebration. Why? Because it changes - right here and right now. So Simple You'll Be Amazed
So
what do I have here... something magical? Not even close. As a matter of fact, it's so simple - yet so effective - that once you apply the concept that I am about to present to you, before long, you will be smiling inside and out as colorful, intriguing, improvisational ideas instantly flow from your own fingertips. This is a very practical approach that will have you improvising within only a few minutes. What's great about this is that, the more you apply yourself to this simple approach, the more you are likely to astonish yourself with your own musical creative ability. The Earliest Beginner At
Any Age Can Do This
You
see, of all the people who have been requesting something that
would give them a clue to how to improvise, a significant number of
these individuals have very little musical experience to begin with.
So, I had to really consider this. The question I had to ask myself was
this: "What I can provide that would make it absolutely impossible for
someone who uses the method to fail, regardless of his or her
experience?"Well, the answer was two-fold: 1) It had to be easy... SUPER EASY for anyone to understand and 2) It had to be concise. In other words, the user of the method could read about it, learn it, and start using it right away, without having to trudge through a pile of "fluff" that he or she would have to understand prior to enjoying instant benefits. In conjunction with those two requisites, the method had to appeal to anyone at any age. You see, I receive email requests from people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's... I wanted this to be easy to use and practical... I wanted to create something that no one would be intimidated by. Also, since I wanted this to get in the hands of anyone reading this, it was absolutely essential that this program be affordable to everyone. A
Little Combo That Makes It Crystal Clear
The
result is what you see here in this guidebook/video presentation.
This is a little package that I had a lot of fun putting
together. What made it fun? Well, aside from the fact that I'm
discussing one of my favorite subjects, the very idea that I knew
that anyone who got their hands on this would achieve results - not in
weeks to come, but now.
You will not be struggling through pages and pages, having to make
painstaking efforts to decipher the essential elements of what you are
reading. This is presented in a simple and clear manner so that you can
use what you've learned immediately.
A
Lesson I Never Forgot
Asking
myself the
question above led to my reflecting on something I experienced in
school on a certain day in ear training class. The teacher was one
fantastic trumpet player. If you ever heard this guy improvise jazz,
he'd spin your head - he did mine. You see, I got to hear him at a
local club practically around the corner from where I was living. Well,
he said something that, at the time, I dismissed to a point because it
seemed too simple at the time. You see, I had already been
"brainwashed" into thinking that I had to eat and sleep chords,
scales, modes, patterns, etc., if I was to become an improviser in the
real sense. Other classes I was taking even confirmed this conviction,
as they promoted learning them like there was no tomorrow. Now, what
this guy said to the class on this day made sense to me but, again, I
dismissed it as something as too easy to be true. You see, he informed
the 20 or so people in that classroom that he did not learn to
improvise that way. The way he learned to improvise was much simpler
and he went on to explain it. This was coming from a trumpet player who
played bebop like others only aspired to!I never forgot that valuable lesson, though it took me years to fully accept that something so easy could be the basis of such creative, musical success. Yet, when I had the opportunity to sit in on a practice session with a jazz orchestra for the very first time, I found myself resorting to what this guy had taught. For me, improvising good musical ideas was new and I was actually intimidated since, as you know, the pianist is called upon to solo more than just a few times in a set! These guys had experience and I was a newbee, to say the least. It came time to play my very first solo during that first session with them and something came over me... it was like a flash of insight... it didn't come to me in the form of words but, rather, a way of thinking. It was solo time and what did I do? Instead of tensing up, I found myself in a totally relaxed mode as I started using this simple principle which I'm going to share with you. Not only was I feeling confident during that first solo and the next few but here was the real kicker... during one of the rehearsals, the director of the orchestra actually paused after one of our performances and made a point of stating to the group that it was refreshing to finally have a pianist who played with such taste. YIKES! Talk about an ego-booster! Can you imagine what a good feeling that was for me? Well, I want to share it with you. I want you to feel that same good feeling that I did. There is one fact that I have no doubt about - you have more improvisational ability than you currently believe you have. Using this simple strategy will have you proving it to yourself.
Simple
And Effective For All Musicians
What's unique about this? Well, as I mentioned, this is a method that won't take a lot of your time to learn. Once you learn it, you own it... it's yours to use and apply and grow with. That last one is significant. You see, like learning a few new words in any language, once you use them a few times, your confidence with using them increases. As you grow with this, you will be able to take what you learn here to dizzying heights of musical creativity. The video itself approximately 15 minutes in duration. The guidebook is short in length. The reason: I wanted to be able to provide this simple, yet effective technique in a manner in which your introduced to it just long enough for you to take it and make it your own quickly. So, within about 20 minutes or less, you can begin applying this easy concept and start creating some interesting melodic embellishments. Before long, you can extend these to longer, more interesting improvisational lines. By the way, this works for all musicians. Sure, the video presentation illustrates the concept being used on the piano keyboard, but this musical approach is effective whether you're a piano player or you play trumpet, saxophone, flute, clarinet, or any other instrument, including your own voice! Vocalists like Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and instrumentalists like Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Count Basie, and others were absolute natural masters at using this technique, as were many others of her time and those that followed. Watch & listen to these two master improvisers in this classic clip: You're
only steps away from beginning the road to improvisational freedom!
But that's just it... you see, this is the most natural way to learn how to improvise... and since that's true, you'll take to it instantly. Success starts today with this.
